Character Name: Abaurycy Niedzic
Series: The Thaumaturge
Age: 30
From When?: He killed himself after he thought Wiktor died in the explosion at Rasputin's table that he felt he could have prevented
Inmate Justification: While Abaurycy himself might make a case for the fact that he is a victim of circumstance, the truth is that he very much made choices he didn't have to in order to get ahead, stepping on other people along the way. Plus, he kind of liked it.
Arrival: Against his will!
Abilities/Powers: Nothing supernatural or outstanding. He can fight and he can use a gun, but that's about it.
Inmate Information: Abaurycy was born to a merchant who got into a spot of financial trouble. When Abaurycy and his friend tried to fix it, he ended up inadvertently causing the death of a loan shark. He and Wiktor had intended on simply scaring the man who had come and beaten his father for money, but when things got out of control, when WIktor’s “magic” didn’t work, they both held the gun that shot the man. Abaurycy did not have the means to dodge consequences like Wiktor did. It got him thrown in a terrible Russian jail for a while and then his father paid the ultimate price. He was on the streets for a long time after that, scrounging for any sort of respect he could find.
For fifteen years, he did odd jobs, he begged, and did what he called “terrible things.” He killed people. He tortured them. And when he loaned money, he ensured he always got his money back, with interest, by whatever means necessary. He drank to excess, partied too much, and resorted easily to violence, but this path led him to the respect he had always craved. He had a group of people who might not understand him, but they stuck around. They love him, in their own fucked up way.
Capricious, arrogant, and prone to big emotions, Abaurycy makes for an unpredictable king of the underworld. His group, his gang, is called the Shivs, and they terrorize Śródmieście and Warsaw in general. Their base of operations is The London Bar, owned by Abaurycy, where he sings and slings drinks in the front and tortures and interrogates people in the back. He even staged a kidnapping there once, just for a lark. Three deaths a month on average happen at the bar. Most not by Abaurycy's hand, though he certainly doesn't stop them. He prefers knocking out teeth and breaking hands. Stiffs spoil the mood, he says. But they don't actually matter to him. They aren’t people. They are props in his world, muses for his poetry. They are bloodstains to clean off the floor and bullet holes to patch. They are shattered windows to mend and money to spend. But not people.
He is a poet, using his own blood to write his verses, citing classic literature and poetry in his daily life. He is clever and quick, but uses his intellect for everything except helping anyone but himself. The plight of the workers, the occupation by Russia, and all the political turmoil in 1905 is on everyone's mind, but Abaurycy finds it tedious. He cares only if people come and drink at his bar and pay their tabs. He cares only about ensuring his place in the world and maintaining the life he has.
Abaurycy is capable of doing the right thing. He understands that what he did in his life to get ahead was distasteful and wrong. He admits that he's glad his father wasn't around to see it because he wouldn't have been proud of him. But none of that actually matters. He has no remorse for it and claims it is because he lives in the present. He has escaped death so many times that he feels he is justified in his life.
Despite this, Abaurycy's main victim all along has been himself. He wants so desperately to be seen as a poet, a great intellectual, but he has never been afforded the opportunity. He stopped going to school at 15, but still managed to make his way in the world. He worked hard, showing great work ethic, but it also makes him blind to the harm he causes. He believes fiercely in loyalty and shows it to a certain few, but gets ridiculously offended when the same isn't shown to him. Murderously offended, actually. Enough that he will put a gun to the head of his closest friend without hesitation for the crime of not wanting to deal with Abaurycy's shenanigans.
Abaurycy ended up becoming the man whose fate had brought him here in the first place. He became that terrible loan shark figure. He was the one beating on men for not having money. But Abaurycy tells the story now of his father with absolutely no irony. He doesn’t see how he has changed.
Path to Redemption: Abaurycy needs a warden who understands the darker side of the world. He needs someone who has lived through what he has lived through and who knows what survival means because he needs to learn to see beyond it. Abaurycy has done a lot in his life that he isn't proud of, but that he views as necessary. He never really got out of that stage, at least in his mind, and needs to be pulled along to figure out how to look outside of himself.
Abaurycy is a lover of chaos and the drink and big emotions. He needs to have someone who can temper that a little. He is already a creative, so giving him more ways to
be creative instead of destructive is key. He can still get his thrills through violence, but he can reign it in to friendly fights only. When he is angry or sad, he doesn't have to take it out on other people.
He needs to learn that he can actually trust people to stick around. He has been abandoned and forgotten so much that doesn't know what people staying for him looks like. He will use intimidation and threats. He will ignore boundaries and needle until he gets what he wants. It isn't the same as them choosing to stay for him, though and he knows it.
The Barge is just another adventure, so he needs someone who is immune to his charms. He will want to deflect and distract by partying and drinking and trying to get others to do the same. Unfortunately, that will only delay his progress.
